I’ve never driven outside the US before, and I’ve got a first generation RAV4 2-door rental booked for tomorrow on the island of Waiheke. What do I need to know?

Try really hard not to rubberneck on all the sick imported cars that are still not legal for the US

All I know is that NZ has the best rental car ever.

Mainly to be careful. Waiheke’s pretty suburban nowadays but there are still a lot of the old school hippies who think that driver’s licenses and vehicle maintenance are just bowing to The Man. Plus there’ll still be a lot of crap on the roads after the storm last week.

Driving on the wrong side’s pretty easy once you get used to it - just engage your brain when you turn out of driveways or intersections, that’s when it’s easiest to go wrong

Also, make sure to go to Man O’War vineyard and Stony Batter battery. It’s right down the other end of the island - interesting drive and beautiful and uncrowded once you get there. Man O’War’s a good place for lunch or an afternoon snack even if wine’s not your thing.

Did you actually see one of those? Surely they’re rare anywhere. Even the wonderland of NZ or Japan

Nah, they’re reasonably common - more so than any other RX, I’d say. I probably see one or two most weeks on my regular commute. We get a LOT of JDM shit here.

Unmolested ones though - THEY’RE rare.

drive on the left.

when turning from a side street or onto a main highway keep left.

i only say this as here in Australia there have been a few accidents over the years of tourists not concentrating and driving on the wrong side of the road and killing people

The JDM stuff doesn’t seem to be that rare here...I’ve seen three old Skyline GT-Rs today. But yeah I took that pic this afternoon

Drive on the left and don’t keep saying at every opportunity, ‘in America we drive on the right side’ (believe me, it gets old fast).

Look on New Zealand tourist board website for local customs, laws, etc... be aware that what may be normal back in the states may be taken offensively or an insult.

Read the declaration card (you’ll get on the plane) if taking any food be it snacks, favourite condiments, fruit, etc... with you, fines are high if you take something, don’t declare it and get caught. Best to declare it, then if asked they will say whether it’s allowed or will not be allowed and will be taken off you.

If asked by an official to do something, be polite and courteous, they are doing their job, play ball and you’ll be able to get on your way faster and able to enjoy your stay more.

What kind of place rents 20yo (non-classic) cars?

It’s a local island rental place, and most of their cars are new but for a discounted rate you can request an “old model” RAV4, which I happen to like and which is perfect for what I want to do.

Left tight. Wide right. Say that over + over + over.

Also they tailgate like you wouldn’t believe. (I drove over there for 3 weeks.)

I’m there rightNow, and would like to give you a digital hug for the suggestion. One of the best places I’ve ever been, the view was breathtaking and the wine is spectacular.
